The geometric typeface HWT Mardell, created by P22 Type Foundry as part of the Hamilton Wood Type Museum's Wood Type Legacy Project, was 3-D printed to create a set of cookie cutters, resulting in a playful and delicious final product. The typeface was converted to three-dimensional objects using Fusion 360, Meshlab and Cura, and printed on an Ultimaker 3 3-D printer with clear PLA filament. Multiple prototypes were made to test the thickness, fill, and usability of the cookie cutters.
Translating HWT Mardell's one-dimensional letterforms into three-dimensional objects creates a unique and interesting opportunity to touch, hold, and feel each letter and number. The 3-D printed objects create a greater appreciation for the attention to detail and precision required to design a typeface, the inspiration behind it, and the space that each letterform takes up on the page. The typeface also exists as wood type and a digital typeface.
